class=\"lead\"><div class=\"entry-content no-share\"><div class=\"content-inner \"><p>Some of the world\u2019s biggest names in oil trading and analyzing can\u2019t seem to get on the same page when it comes to predicting what will happen next for the volatile commodity.<\/p><p>Some, like Jeffrey Currie of Goldman Sachs and Christyan Malek of JPMorgan, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f87ce114-f437-4c3f-bb73-fa38ca78146b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Financial Times<\/a>, are confident that oil is ready for the next\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Energy-General\/Oil-Prices-Soar-Amid-Rumors-Of-New-Commodities-Supercycle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supercycle<\/a>\u2014a prolonged rise in the price of oil.<\/p><p>And when they refer to this rise, they\u2019re talking $80, or even $100 per barrel.<\/p><p>Others, like oil analyst Arjun Murti who correctly predicted the last $100+ per barrel achievement seen between 2008 and 2014, say that talk of this next supercycle may be a bit hasty.<\/p><p>For Malek, he sees a situation where demand outstrips supply, before \u201cwe don\u2019t need it in the years to come.\u201d<\/p><p>The reason for supercycle predictions is simple: stimulus packages, most notably the stimulus package that the U.S. government is expected to roll out, are expected to boost consumption.<\/p><p>And according to Currie, this stimulus will create a \u201csignificant, commodity-intensive consumption\u201d as the stimulus package is mostly targeting lower and middle-income households.<\/p><p>\u201cThese people don\u2019t drive Teslas,\u201d Currie explained. \u201cThey drive SUVs\u201d.<\/p><p>Murti, on the other hand, thinks that if oil demand were to increase by a half a million barrels per day over the next year, it wouldn\u2019t be enough to outstrip supply.<\/p><p>As a point of reference, global oil demand sank roughly 10 million barrels per day as a result of the pandemic in 2020.<\/p><p>If, however, oil demand were to pick up steam by as much as 1.4 million barrels per day, a supercycle may follow.<\/p><p>Veteran trader Pierre Andurand told the Financial Times that the fate of oil prices rests on OPEC\u2014specifically on how much oil they supply.<\/p><p>Standing in the way of the next supercycle, says Andurand, could be Iran returning to the global oil markets, and OPEC\u2019s production in general.<\/p><p>Retired veteran trader\u2014a particularly successful one that made a not-so-small fortune on oil\u2019s last supercycle\u2014Andy Hall, sees the oil market in \u201cterminal decline\u201d the Financial Times writes, and likened any price rally as a dead cat bounce.<\/p><p>Source: <a
