At the cornerstone of Chart’s business is a portfolio of complementary cryogenic products. It is the integration of these products to deliver highly engineered solutions across the liquid gas supply chain that makes Chart unique.
Small-scale LNG is bringing natural gas power to off-grid locations and providing an alternative transport fuel for trucks, ships and even railway locomotives. It uses the virtual pipeline is an alternative to a physical pipeline where liquid gas is transported from its source and stored at point of end-use in shop built cryogenic tanks. By utilizing cryogenics to store gas in liquid form the tanks are either much smaller than their gaseous equivalents (liquefaction reduces natural gas to 1/600th of its gaseous volume) and/or high pressure storage is eliminated. Furthermore, because tanks are standard sizes and shop built total storage capacity is modularized, which reduces project cost, complexity, risk and timescale. In addition to many local storage and vaporization hubs for businesses and communities, Chart has built large scale infrastructure projects including the import terminal in Klaipeda and LNG to power station in Gibraltar.
While much of what is required to develop the hydrogen economy is new, novel or requires significant scale-up, cryogenic distribution and storage is already proven and demonstrable with many hundreds of Chart hydrogen tanks in operation. Applications include energy, industry, science and space exploration.
Chart’s principal engineering and manufacturing facility in Europe is in Decin, Czech Republic plus we also have major engineering and manufacturing in Italy, specialty manufacturing in Germany and an extensive aftersales network throughout the region.
