Over the last three years, the global biofuels sector has undergone significant transformation driven by evolving policy frameworks, ambitious sustainability goals, and innovation at the process level, according to Dr Raj Shah, Diogo Moscato, and Mathew Stephen Roshan.
Within corn-based ethanol production, advances in enzyme-assisted processing have enhanced the conversion of starch and fibre, enabling higher ethanol output without expanding agricultural land requirements. These improvements have also reinforced the value of co-products, including distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and biochar. At the same time, progress in carbon capture and storage technologies has allowed ethanol producers to participate in voluntary carbon markets, lowering lifecycle carbon intensity while strengthening long-term economic performance.
