John Crane Marks 50 Years Of Dry Gas Seals

John Crane, a Smiths Group plc company and a global specialist in flow-control and rotating-equipment solutions, is commemorating five decades since a landmark innovation in gas compression sealing. The launch of the Type 28 dry gas seal in 1976 marked a major advance in compressor performance, redefining industry expectations for reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.

Although early development of non-contacting spiral-groove sealing technology began in 1968 and the first commercial application followed in 1975, it was the 1976 debut of the Type 28 design that proved transformative. Over the years, dry gas seals have become standard equipment in centrifugal compressors serving sectors including oil and gas, petrochemicals, and power generation, with growing adoption in hydrogen production and carbon capture technologies.
