Kip Cleverley, Chief Sustainability Officer at Synagro Technologies, and James Hygate OBE, Chief Executive Officer of Firefly Green Fuels, share their perspectives on how the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sector is likely to perform over the coming year.
Prospects for the SAF market remain highly positive. Demand continues to grow rapidly, and commitment to meeting international regulatory targets is strong. Among the most promising developments is an emerging production pathway that converts sewage biosolids into jet fuel (SBtJ), a process pioneered by UK-based Firefly Green Fuels.
The underlying technology for transforming biosolids into biocrude has already been validated, and the resulting fuel is virtually indistinguishable from conventional fossil-based jet fuel. Biosolids present an attractive feedstock option: they are plentiful, sustainable, and relatively low in value. This offers significant potential for the aviation sector, which currently accounts for roughly 2.5% of global CO₂ emissions.
