Flyability Announce UT Probe Payload for the Elios 3 in Partnership with Cygnus – Marking Industry Milestone
Flyability, a leader in confined space drones, has partnered with Cygnus to introduce a new ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) payload for the Elios 3. This innovation supports certified UT inspectors & expands drone applications in hazardous & hard-to-reach environments.
The payload enables spot thickness measurements of steel in ship hulls, tanks, & pipe racks. With UT critical to many inspection processes, the Elios 3 provides a safer way to access thickness measurement locations (TMLs), eliminating the need for scaffolding or crawlers. The ultrasonic probe is mounted on a smart arm with a laser pointer for precise targeting, while a remote couplant dispenser ensures optimal ultrasound transmission. Each measurement can be location-tagged on a digital twin of the asset, & a cleaning module prepares surfaces when needed.
CEO Patrick Thévoz noted that UTM capability has been one of the most requested features since Flyability’s early projects. After four years of development, the Elios 3 now offers a reliable alternative for inspections in confined or elevated spaces.
The payload integrates seamlessly with the Elios 3’s piloting app Cockpit, allowing real-time visualization of live A-scans, manual gate adjustments, & through-coating or auto measurement modes. Users can choose from twin crystal piezo-composite transducers, benefitting from Cygnus’s 40 years of UT expertise. The system complies with ISO 16809 standards, ensuring accuracy & reliability.
Cygnus Managing Director Lulu Crosthwaite-Eyre highlighted the long-standing demand for drone-based UT inspections, noting this collaboration as a milestone in safer non-destructive testing across industries.
Announced at the Flyability User Conference in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Elios 3 UTM payload will be available for demonstration & purchase, with first deliveries expected in Q3 2024. This marks the third modular unit for the Elios 3, broadening its role in mapping, surveying & industrial inspection.
