UK chemical company INEOS has pledged to stay ahead of EU climate and energy targets at its businesses in Antwerp, Belgium.
The company says that all its sites in Antwerp, including the Project ONE cracker and propane dehydrogenation unit, will be climate-neutral by 2050 at the latest. The EU wants greenhouse gas emissions to be 55% below 1990 levels by 2030. The main focus will be on reducing emissions in the first place, rather than capturing and storing them, although this will remain an option.
INEOS says that the commitment is ‘science-based’, and includes practical measures such as fuel switching, the use of green electricity, and collaboration in existing industrial waste heat and steam networks in the region. It will optimise its existing carbon capture activity at Zwijndrecht, increase the use of hydrogen in its chemical processes and power plants, and invest in electrification. The company also plans to be involved in the Power to Methanol project for sustainable methanol production at Lillo, and will also invest in hydrogen technology, which it believes is a ‘game-changer’, and which is a ‘core part’ of its future business.
Using bio-based feedstocks will also lower the carbon footprint of its products and give downstream greenhouse gas emissions savings compared to using conventional feedstocks.
‘We have a clear, achievable road-map to effectively contribute to a reduction of emissions from our sites in Antwerp which includes changing to green power and clean heat, reusing hydrogen and CO2, further investment in electrification and where appropriate switching to recycled or bio-feedstock,’ says Hans Casier CEO INEOS Belgium.
