Eco-fuels, a powerful ally in the energy transition

Society is immersed in the challenge of promoting initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions to achieve the highest possible decarbonisation, especially in the transport sector and, specifically, large-tonnage and long-distance transport , which is difficult to electrify.

In this fight against climate change, eco-fuels can become one of the best allies, not only because they generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions, but also because they help drive innovation and allow the use of existing infrastructures , including the fleet of vehicles. In addition, they constitute an efficient alternative in terms of cost / price with a positive social impact, since it allows economic development in rural areas and offers solutions for waste that otherwise would not have a circular economy alternative.

In this sense, it is important to analyze emissions globally, taking into account the entire life cycle of energy carriers. That is, from the amounts of CO 2 generated in the previous production processes, to the emissions recorded during combustion or use of vehicles.

Researching since the 90s
Exolum has been one of the pioneering agents in the development in Spain of this type of low-carbon fuels, in which the refining sector in our country works intensively and in the implementation of rigorous systems to control and guarantee their quality throughout of the production and distribution processes.

At the beginning of the nineties, when there were still no production projects in Spain, at Exolum we began to carry out studies on the behavior, evolution and possibilities of using eco / biofuels. That was the starting point to design and build adequate infrastructure for its logistics in order to offer this service to our customers, and that they, in turn, respond to the new needs of the market . Exolum currently has infrastructures in Spain fully adapted for the storage and distribution of biofuels, and collaborates with producers in the development and promotion of advanced 2nd generation biofuels.

To facilitate the incorporation of biofuels into the logistics system, we not only design new infrastructures, but also improve our quality control and assurance systems . Thus, we have developed protocols, established standards and fine-tuned test equipment and methods with the sole purpose that the fuels that are distributed to the market can be used in vehicles with all the guarantees.

Sustainable fuel for air transport
And what can we say about air transport? Well, from Exolum we are also committed to the promotion, marketing and distribution of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). To do this, we have developed the AVIKOR platform that offers both individuals and companies taking off from Spain to fly in a more sustainable way by reducing emissions from their flight using sustainable aviation fuel . SAFs are produced from waste or materials of vegetable origin, so that, in their complete life cycle, the emissions derived from their use are up to 80% lower than those of conventional fuel.

Avikor calculates the liters of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) needed to reduce or eliminate emissions from the flights requested by the customer and is responsible for introducing this fuel into the airport’s refueling system, replacing traditional kerosene. It is a way of taking advantage of the infrastructures that we already have in the main Spanish airports and also contributing to the energy transition and the fight against climate change.

At Exolum we trust in continuing to grow, adapting our services to the new market demands in order to make our company purpose come true: to create innovative solutions to improve the world.
