RWE to build ammonia terminal at Brunsbüttel

German energy company RWE is planning an ammonia terminal at Brunsbüttel, Germany in the immediate vicinity of the German LNG Terminal.

Earlier in March 2022, RWE joined forces with Dutch gas company Gasunie and signed a memorandum of understanding with German state-owned bank Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau (KfW) to develop the German LNG Terminal. RWE says that the new ammonia terminal will facilitate the conversion of the whole Brunsbüttel site to import ‘green molecules’ and to help Germany achieve its decarbonisation goals.

From 2026, RWE hopes to import 300,000 tpa of green ammonia at the Brunsbüttel site, which has direct access to the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, and has good connections to Europe’s inland waterways. It is also planning to build an industrial-scale cracker at the site to produce green hydrogen, which will be transported to industrial customers via a dedicated pipeline. The import capacity will be expanded to 2 million tpa to support the cracker. Brunsbüttel Ports is supporting the project, offering space and port infrastructure to unload tankers. RWE expects a total investment in the mid three-digit million euro range.
