Industry Setback: UK’s Largest Bioethanol Plant to Close

Vivergo, the UK’s largest bioethanol facility and part of AB Foods, is beginning shutdown operations after the government declined to provide a rescue package, a move that will cost 160 jobs.

The decision follows the UK-US trade deal removing tariffs on US ethanol, which AB Foods says undermines domestic production and weakens the UK’s clean fuel capabilities.

As the energy transition accelerates, this raises serious questions about policy alignment, sovereign fuel security, and support for industrial decarbonisation.
