The Global Tank Storage Success Stories with Gordium B.V.

By Geoffrey van Elderen, Managing Director
Gordium – Digital Transformation Solution

Gordium was the Gold winner in the Digital Transformation Solution category at the Global Tank Storage Awards for its Evergreen HAZOP platform. By replacing five‑year, consultant‑led HAZOP cycles with a continuously maintained, AI-powered risk environment, Gordium enables liquid bulk terminal operators to keep process hazard analysis live and aligned with the real plant, while reducing preparation time, external consultancy dependence and overall lifecycle cost.

  • Category: Digital Transformation Solution
  • Project focus: Evergreen, continuously maintained HAZOP and PHA platform for terminal operators
  • Main benefit: 50%+ reduction in HAZOP/LoPA preparation and facilitation time, saving 50,000–100,000 EUR per terminal per year

What is the Gordium® platform about?

Gordium® is a cloud-based SaaS platform that replaces the industry’s dominant model of periodic HAZOP studies — typically run every five years by external consultants using generic tools or spreadsheets — with a continuously maintained, AI-powered risk platform built specifically for liquid bulk terminal storage operators. The platform covers HAZOP, LoPA and Bow-Tie within a single environment and keeps the process hazard analysis alive between revalidations rather than treating it as a one-off deliverable.

We pre-load the platform with sector-specific scenario libraries, safeguard catalogues and risk intelligence for the terminal storage domain, so operators can produce expert-quality PHA output with their own in-house team. In practice, this enables an Evergreen HAZOP, a live risk record that reflects the plant as it actually is today, not as it was at the last revalidation cycle.

What main challenge were you trying to solve?

In our sector, process hazard analysis has been anchored to a five-year revalidation cycle for decades. That means you have a risk record that is current on day one and outdated from day two onwards, as plant modifications, new products, incident learnings and safeguard changes accumulate without ever feeding back into the HAZOP.

We saw that the industry was relying on expensive external consultants and generic tools, and that operators were left with documentation that rarely reflected actual plant conditions and that did not convincingly demonstrate the continuous control regulators and insurers increasingly expect.

What solution did you implement?

We built Gordium® to replace the periodic-study model with a continuously maintained risk platform. The core elements we implemented are:

  • A structured knowledge graph that holds every scenario, deviation, safeguard and ALARP decision in a single, always-current record.
  • AI-assisted scenarios coverage, pre-loaded with terminal-sector hazard profiles, including energy transition products such as ammonia, methanol, hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
  • A closed Management of Change loop that routes every plant modification directly back into the live HAZOP.
  • Fully structured regulatory documentation (Seveso III, BRZO, COMAH, OSHA PSM) generated as a natural output of the risk process, rather than as a separate reporting exercise.
  • A subscription model that sells to the asset-owning organisation rather than to external consultants, making the tool operable by the in-house HSE team.

We also bundle a Best Practice PHA Guideline, authored by Gordium and already reused as the basis for several customers’ group-level standards, with our Enterprise tier.

What made this solution different from other options?

From the beginning, we chose a different design philosophy. Most established competitors in process safety software are architected around the study session, a periodic event with a start, a facilitator and an end report. Gordium® is architected around the risk register that lives between sessions.

Because the platform is pre-loaded with terminal-sector knowledge, operators do not start from a blank page. And because it is built to be operated by the asset owner’s team, they do not have to rely on external consultants to run it. As a result, a HAZOP revalidation becomes a checkpoint into the live record rather than a rebuild from scratch, reducing preparation time, improving documentation quality and removing dependency on a single facilitating firm or individual.

To our knowledge, no direct competitor currently offers a continuously maintained, sector-specific PHA environment designed for in-house operation at this level of domain depth.

What measurable results did you achieve?

We see Gordium® reducing HAZOP and LoPA preparation and facilitation time by more than 50% through AI-assisted scenarios coverage, which eliminates the blank-page facilitation that consumes the majority of a traditional study’s time. For a typical tank storage operator, this translates into savings upwards of 50–100K EUR annually per terminal.

Customers tell us they are seeing consistent documentation quality across studies, regardless of the in-house experience level present in the room, which is just as important as the time and cost savings.

What was the biggest success or highlight of this project?

For me, the biggest success is conceptual: showing that the HAZOP does not have to be a periodic document. The five-year cycle is so deeply embedded in the industry that most operators have stopped questioning it.

Through working deployments at terminal operators across multiple jurisdictions, we have demonstrated that an Evergreen HAZOP is achievable with in-house teams, at a cost that compares favourably with a single external study cycle. The Gold award recognition confirms that the broader industry is ready to see process hazard analysis as a continuous discipline rather than a scheduled event.

Where do you see this technology going next?

In the near term, we are focused on deepening coverage across the global liquid bulk terminal sector, where the energy transition — ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, sustainable aviation fuel — is generating a continuous demand for fresh HAZOPs beyond the standard revalidation cycle.

Beyond terminals, we are developing sector-specific knowledge graphs for oil and gas and pharma, and are already in active exploration with a major chemical manufacturer. Longer term, our ambition is for Gordium® to become the standard platform through which process-safety-regulated industries demonstrate continuous risk control to regulators, insurers and boards — not once every five years, but at any point in time.
