What was the GreenSTR project?

GreenSTR is a specialised storage project developed to provide the infrastructure needed for the storage, handling and blending of alternative marine fuels. The initiative is focused on supporting the shipping industry’s decarbonisation by enabling the use of fuels such as methanol, FAME and HVO within a dedicated bunker storage environment.
 
The project is being developed with flexibility at its core, recognising that the future marine fuels market remains uncertain and will continue to evolve in response to regulation, customer demand and technological developments. GreenSTR is intended to create a robust and adaptable logistics platform that can respond to these changing requirements while maintaining operational efficiency and supply chain reliability.
 

What challenge did GreenSTR address?

GreenSTR addresses a clear infrastructure gap in the marine fuels market. As legislation and decarbonisation initiatives accelerate the transition to lower-carbon shipping, the industry increasingly requires specialised storage and blending capacity for new bunker fuels. However, this infrastructure is not yet widely available at the scale and level of flexibility needed.
 
As an active terminal operator in the marine fuels storage market, STR recognised the importance of staying ahead of these developments. Product flexibility is essential in an uncertain market, particularly as demand may shift between biofuels and other lower-carbon marine fuels. GreenSTR was therefore conceived to provide future-ready infrastructure, supported by available land and quay access, with permit applications in preparation and engineering activities under way.
 

What solution did GreenSTR implement?

GreenSTR’s solution is the development of state-of-the-art infrastructure dedicated to the niche of bio-bunker fuels and alternative marine fuels. The project is designed to support biodiesel and blending options, as well as methanol and ethanol as marine fuels, in response to changing market requirements and regulation such as RED III, FuelEU Maritime and the EU ETS.
 
The planned infrastructure combines storage capability with strong multimodal logistics connections. In addition to serving seagoing vessels, the project includes access for barges and coasters, with berthing capacity for vessels up to MR size. Rail connection and truck loading are also envisaged, ensuring inland distribution and broader connectivity across the fuel supply chain.

GreenSTR stands out because of its unique focus on the bunker storage market, a niche that requires both specialised infrastructure and strong operational expertise. This differentiates STR from many peers in the wider storage industry, as the project is specifically designed around the future requirements of alternative marine fuels rather than more traditional storage activities.
 
STR also benefits from having the area, jetty space and operational capabilities needed to bring this infrastructure to life. This combination of available physical capacity, market focus and logistics know-how positions GreenSTR as a practical and scalable response to the changing marine fuels landscape.
 

What impact did GreenSTR achieve?

GreenSTR has already achieved important development milestones and continues to move steadily towards implementation. The project has successfully advanced through the conceptual stage, with land and quay availability secured, permit applications being prepared and engineering now in progress.
 
The ambition is to be operational by 2027 with truck-to-ship operations and by 2029 with full tank infrastructure in place. These milestones represent significant progress towards creating a dedicated logistics platform for alternative marine fuels and supporting the decarbonisation of maritime transport.
 

What were the key highlights and recognition?

One of the project’s biggest highlights has been the alignment of customer interest with a clearly defined and realistic project scope. This has helped validate the market need for the infrastructure and reinforced confidence in the project’s direction.
 
Another key success has been the steady translation of concept into execution. By combining strategic planning, available infrastructure and a future-oriented market vision, GreenSTR is moving closer each day to delivering what the marine fuels market needs in terms of a future-proof industry solution.
 

What is next for this technology?

Looking ahead, GreenSTR is expected to evolve alongside the marine fuels market itself. While the current focus is on biofuels and alcohol-based marine fuels, the infrastructure is being considered with future adaptability in mind.
 
As demand changes over time, GreenSTR could expand to include hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives as marine fuels. This would allow the project to continue supporting the shipping industry’s transition over the longer term, while reinforcing its role as a flexible and forward-looking storage and logistics platform.
