The incident was reported on Friday 11 September 2026. New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) said it remains unclear how much diesel entered Anderson Creek, a tributary of the Hackensack River.

 

Emergency crews installed containment barriers and deployed vacuum trucks to recover fuel from the creek. The clean-up operation remains ongoing.

 

Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli said the incident should never have happened, but noted that rapid reporting and response had prevented the diesel from reaching the Hackensack River.
