Phillips 66 Limited and Calor are celebrating four decades since the Immingham LPG Caverns first became operational. This jointly owned underground storage site has played a key role in supporting the UK’s LPG supply since 1986.
Situated at the Humber Refinery LPG Terminal, the facility consists of two caverns excavated roughly 200 metres beneath the surface in chalk. Each cavern has a storage capacity of about 110,000 cubic metres and is used to hold propane and butane, helping to meet demand nationwide.
Constructed between 1980 and 1986, the project was a major investment at the time. More than 40 years later, the site continues to serve as a vital strategic asset, particularly in managing seasonal demand and ensuring resilience during peak winter periods.
