The Global Tank Storage Success Stories with Axfaltec, part of the Aquarius Energy Group (AQE)

By Harold Orta, Management System Coordinator, Axfaltec, part of the Aquarius Energy Group (AQE)

Axfaltec, part of the Aquarius Energy Group (AQE), developed an innovative safety communication initiative designed to make workplace safety more practical, visible and engaging for frontline teams. By combining management systems, operational excellence and employee participation, the project introduced a series of workplace safety videos based on real tasks and real employees. Originally created for Axfaltec, the initiative was later adopted across multiple AQE locations in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, helping strengthen safety culture and supporting industry recognition.

Axfaltec safety communication initiative

What was the safety communication initiative?

The safety communication initiative was developed by Axfaltec to improve how safety and management system requirements are understood and applied across daily operations. At the heart of the project was a series of short educational videos featuring real employees carrying out tasks safely in their actual working environment.

The initiative was created to make safety communication more practical and meaningful for frontline teams. Instead of treating procedures as documents to read and file away, the project turned key safety messages into visible and relatable learning tools that employees could apply directly in their day-to-day work.

What challenge did the safety communication initiative address?

One of the main challenges was ensuring that safety and management system requirements were not seen as administrative obligations disconnected from operational reality. Many frontline employees understand procedures more effectively when they can see practical examples rather than only reading written instructions.

The challenge was therefore to make safety communication more engaging, accessible and memorable, while also reinforcing a positive safety culture across different operational teams. Axfaltec wanted to create an approach that encouraged employees to connect safety expectations with real workplace behaviours.

What solution did Axfaltec implement?

Axfaltec implemented a safety engagement programme centred on short educational workplace videos. These videos featured real employees, real tasks and real workplace situations, helping translate safety procedures and management system requirements into practical guidance.

The videos were supported by wider improvements to management systems, training initiatives, competency development activities and stronger communication of operational risks. By combining visual learning, technical knowledge and positive reinforcement, the solution helped make safety more visible, practical and relevant to everyday operations.

What made this solution different?

This initiative stood out because it was built around authenticity. Unlike traditional safety training approaches that rely heavily on presentations, procedures or generic materials, Axfaltec’s solution used real operational scenarios from within the organisation itself.

Because the content was developed internally, it reflected the company’s actual culture, people and challenges. This helped create stronger engagement and ownership among employees. Its later adoption across multiple AQE terminals also demonstrated that the approach was relevant and effective beyond a single site.

What impact did the safety communication initiative achieve?

The initiative contributed to increased workforce engagement with safety topics and strengthened awareness of critical operational risks. It also expanded significantly beyond its original scope, with the safety videos being adopted across AQE facilities in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

The project further supported Axfaltec’s achievement of Bronze in the Health & Safety Excellence category at the Tank Storage Awards. This external recognition highlighted the value of the initiative and its contribution to a stronger safety culture.

What were the key highlights and recognition?

One of the biggest highlights was seeing a locally developed initiative create international value. What started as an effort to improve safety communication at Axfaltec became a learning tool used across multiple AQE locations.

Another important highlight was industry recognition through Axfaltec’s Bronze award in the Health & Safety Excellence category at the Tank Storage Awards. The project demonstrated that effective innovation does not always require complex technology; sometimes the greatest impact comes from making important messages simple, relatable and human.

What is next for this initiative?

Looking ahead, the initiative is expected to evolve through additional video content, digital learning tools and broader integration with competence development programmes. There is also clear potential to share best practices more widely between terminals and strengthen a global learning network within AQE.

The long-term goal is to make safety communication increasingly interactive, accessible and effective, while supporting a consistent safety culture across all operations.
