Tank fire stops operations at Pemex Salina Cruz refinery

Operations ceased at the 330,000 bpd Salina Cruz refinery in Oaxaca state, Mexico, owned by Mexico’s state oil company Pemex, following a fire in a gasoline tank on 16 April 2022 which took 24 hours to extinguish.
Pemex has not yet discussed the cause of the fire, in tank TV-102 in the pumping and storage area of the refinery complex. However, the company revealed that the fire started in the upper part of the tank. Processing units in the refinery were gradually shutdown to ensure safety.
Pemex’s own firefighters and those of the regional emergency unit, Grupo Regional de Atención y Manejo de Emergencias Sur (GRAME SUR), attended the blaze, and completed operations to extinguish the flames, and cool the remaining product and tanks. A source told Argus that 33,000 bbl of gasoline burned during the incident. As of 18 April, 26 refinery units remained closed, according to the source.
