Northern Lights has received full regulatory approval to begin CO2 injection and storage operations under the Aurora Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) licence in the North Sea.
The Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the Norwegian Environmental Agency (NEA), and the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority (Havtil) have all given the green light for the first phase of the Northern Lights project.
“This is a major milestone for the CCS chain in Norway. The Norwegian authorities have granted the necessary permits to inject and store carbon dioxide (CO2) on the Norwegian continental shelf. With these consents in place, we are on track to safely commence CO2 transport and storage operations in Northern Lights,” said Tim Heijn, Managing Director of Northern Lights JV.
The approved permit allows for the injection and storage of up to 37.5 million tonnes of CO2 over the next 25 years. This covers the first phase of the project, which includes a transport and storage capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year.
