The Global Tank Storage Success Stories with BlastXpert B.V.

By Joey Wijnolst, Founder, BlastXpert B.V.

Your surface passed inspection. But how much did it cost you to get there?

In optimisation projects, BlastXpert has reduced surface preparation costs by up to 50% while increasing productivity by more than 30%. Not by replacing systems, but by understanding what was actually happening.

The result of surface preparation gets inspected, but rarely the efficiency of the process itself.

That is the gap BlastXpert addresses.

What was the BlastXpert project?

In one project, BlastXpert supported a large shipyard in making its surface-preparation activities more efficient. The work looked beyond the final result and focused on the performance of the process and the people involved.

Although this project was delivered at a shipyard, the challenge is equally relevant to tank-storage contractors and asset owners: achieving the required surface standard while reducing cost, material use, operational time and environmental impact.

What challenge did BlastXpert address?

The high cost of surface preparation is becoming increasingly challenging due to rules and regulations. At the same time, many inefficiencies remain unknown because knowledge is fragmented, rarely supported by data, and the efficiency of the overall process is rarely assessed independently.

Many surface preparation processes deliver a perfectly acceptable surface, while the differences in time, cost and environmental impact can be substantial. As long as the result passes inspection, those differences can easily remain unnoticed.

What solution did BlastXpert implement?

BlastXpert starts without assumptions and without a predefined product or system to sell.

The approach is straightforward:
  • listen to the people doing the work;
  • observe and measure actual process performance;
  • identify the largest sources of loss;
  • implement practical improvements;
  • verify the results; and
  • help sustain the improvements over time.

Only once the process is understood does BlastXpert assess which changes, products or investments could deliver the greatest realistic impact.

What made this solution different?

BlastXpert operates independently, with no product or predetermined solution to sell.

The team first listens, observes and measures alongside the people doing the work. It then determines what can realistically be improved and where changes will have the greatest impact.

Only after that does BlastXpert consider potential solutions, products or investments.

What impact did BlastXpert achieve?

Results vary by project, but improvements have included up to 50% lower consumables costs and more than 30% higher productivity, often through relatively small changes to existing processes.

Small improvements. Big consequences.

What were the key highlights and recognition?

Proving that even when the results pass inspection and processes are considered to be performing well, approaching them differently can still lead to significant improvements.

BlastXpert B.V. was shortlisted for the Rising Star Award at the Global Tank Storage Awards 2026, held on site during StocExpo in March 2026. The shortlist recognised the company’s independent, data-led approach to improving efficiency in surface preparation and blasting operations.

What is next for this approach?

BlastXpert aims to make the independent assessment of surface-preparation efficiency a routine part of operations.

Regular independent BlastChecks can give contractors and asset owners a way to verify process performance and continuously identify opportunities for improvement.

Coating inspection tells us about the results.
BlastXpert tells us how efficiently they got there.
