Essar Energy Transition (EET) Fuels has successfully completed the installation and connection of a hydrogen-ready furnace at its Stanlow refinery – marking a major milestone for the UK’s energy transition.
Located at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire, the Stanlow site is one of Europe’s largest oil refineries and supplies around 16% of all road transport fuels in the UK. The site processes 4.4 billion litres of diesel every year and plays a crucial role in national energy infrastructure.
Delivered in 2022, the new furnace replaces three existing units and will account for approximately 10% of the refinery’s total energy consumption. It has been designed to operate on 100% refinery off gas (ROG), a mix of ROG and hydrogen, or entirely on hydrogen – making it a vital step toward low-carbon industrial operations.
As EET Fuels works to develop the world’s leading low-carbon process refinery, this hydrogen-ready technology brings the company one step closer to its goal of decarbonising one of the UK’s most important energy assets.
